Freeze

Filed under: Mac OS X Crashes — jasony @ 1:11 pm

Mac completely froze in Mail. I installed the new 512MB DIMM the other day and immediately began having problems. Typical manifestation is that the OS will totally freeze (clock, mouse, etc) and I have to force a reboot. It’s done this four times now, starting about 60 seconds after I first installed the RAM. Did it on reboot, then it was okay for a few days. I just opened up the box to remove an old hard drive, closed it up, and it froze on the next reboot after about 30 minutes.

Strangely, it never freezes when I’m logged in on Erin’s screen name. So is it hardware, software, or voodoo?

Frustrating. I strongly suspect the new RAM.

Okay, this is the web site I’ve been waiting for. Are you at the end of your current groceries and need to go to the store? Still need to make dinner? Go to this site and check all the ingredients you still have in your pantry. It’ll give you recipes that you can make! Very cool! I’ve wanted this for a long time.

Instead of relentlessly pursuing survival even after our survival needs are met, we must learn how to do things because they fulfill us— because they are, in a word, fun. Fun is not a distraction from work or a drain on our revenue; it is the very source of both our inspiration and our value. A genuine sense of play ignites our creativity, eases communication, promotes goodwill and engenders loyalty, yet we tend to shun it as detrimental to the seriousness with which we think we need to approach our businesses and careers.

Laser Printer

Filed under: Computing — jasony @ 4:31 pm

Well, I went and did it. After having such bad luck with the old inkjet printer I decided to buy a color laser and just get it over with. I’ve been doing research on different models for a few months and had narrowed it down to just a few. I had decided to go ahead and wait a few months to see what the new models would bring, but last night I walked into Office Depot and saw that they had their HP Color Laserjet 2600N on sale for $259 after instant/mail in rebates. I came home to do some research and went back to snatch it up today. It’s sitting proudly in my office now (well… as “proudly” as the thing can sit). It’s big! Prints really good looking letterhead and CD covers (what I’ll use it on most of the time), and even does a fairly decent photo. PC Magazine gave it an editor’s choice back when it was $300-499, so I figure for half the price I can’t go wrong.

The other nice thing is that it came with full ink cartridges, not the half-full ones that lame companies ship with their printers to try and get more of your money soon. I think HP builds their printers to last so long so they know that you’ll be back many times. They don’t need to tick off prospective customers by squeezing them for a few more bucks. Good for them.

The printer is USB and network compatible (IP based so I’ll be able to print to the home printer from anywhere I have internet access- cool!). I need to get a longer network cable (or finish the home network we built into the house). The only downside to the printer is that it won’t work in OS 9. I’ll keep the old monochrome printer around for Finale work, and it’s refills are cheaper anyway. Oh, and the ink carts are only good for 2000 prints. I wanted ones that were good for at least 4k, but I’d have had to spent more than $600 to get into one of those and I couldn’t justify the difference. At $90/cart (4 required), it’s actually cheaper to buy a new printer than to refill this one! One thing that I found funny was that the printer ships with 16mb of RAM… I can remember when 16 meg of memory alone would have cost more than $300.

If you’re in the market for a color laser printer, I’d highly suggest dropping by an Office Depot in the next day or so. Their rebate/sale is only going on for a couple of days and these printers are moving fast. They sold the last one at one store 20 minutes before I got there. I had to rush to another store and get the 2nd to last one they had. I don’t think they know what a great deal it is. By way of comparison, when I bought my first laser printer- a monochrome, 6ppm, 600×600 TI model- back circa 1994, it cost me over $1200. How far we’ve come.

Abandoned

Filed under: Disclosure — jasony @ 7:36 pm

When we moved to Austin almost five years ago (!) one of the first things we did was look for a good church. We’re from different denominational backgrounds and went to all kinds of different churches while at Baylor. BU isn’t just for the Baptist crowd, though it wasn’t unusual for the predominantly Baptist students to go to all sorts of different churches. While I was there I went to baptist, methodist, presbyterian, evangelical, you-name-it. The basics are all the same even when the minor details differ.

So we moved here with the idea that we would “church shop” a lot before we settled on something. We were surprised how quickly we settled on our current church. The senior pastor there was one of the very finest that I’ve ever seen, and we soon discovered a very vibrant and enthusiastic group of people, a very fine music ministry, and a bunch of good friends. One year after moving here we had formed a new support group and felt like this was home. There were four main minsters that really made the church feel like home- our stellar senior pastor, his two assistant pastors, and a really fine youth director/pastor.

Unfortunately, about six months ago our youth pastor accepted a call to become the co-pastor at a church in frozen Montana. It was understandable that he would leave since he was essentially “moving up in the ranks” and the move made sense for him professionally. A couple of months later, however, our senior pastor moved on to a bigger church in Colorado Springs. We were all shocked and disappointed to lose him, but the church still had two fine head-ministers left. About two months ago one of the assistant pastors announced that he had accepted a call to be on staff at a big Houston church. This was starting to feel too familiar.

We got the letter today with the opening paragraph we’ve become very familiar with. Within the first few sentences it was apparent that we were being set up for the Big Announcement. Yup. Lost the last one. This particular minister has been a wonderful, accessible, gracious and peaceful presence and in some ways the one we’ll miss the most.

So in the course of less than one year the entire top leadership of our church has gone. I know on one level that each leaving can be explained as better opportunities, career starting, being closer to the grandkids, whatever, but we still can’t help but feel that we’ve been abandoned, and I’ve heard several friends at church say the same thing. There is a lot of frustration, anxiety, and even a little anger. It’s like having the captain of the ship leave mid-voyage, followed by the co-pilot, then the steward, then the guy who mans the boilers. “Sorry to leave you like this, but there’s a better ship for me to sail over there! I’m sure you’re in good hands with the staff that’s still onboard!”… It’s painful but understandable until you hear the speech several times and notice how empty the place is getting. We even got a letter today that said “transitions of pastoral staff during an interim senior pastorate are quite common and to be expected, but that doesn’t make the sense of loss go away.”

You can say all the true things about a church not consisting of the leadership, or that the church shouldn’t be simply a group of people dedicated to one specific dynamic speaker, or how it’s the people, and not the leadership that really makes up a church. It’s all true, but to have the leadership of our little community of faith eviscerated so thoroughly in such a short period of time is jarring. I get the sense that people there have started to shelter themselves from the emotional risk of attaching too closely to anyone new for fear that they too will find a better opportunity elsewhere.

RAM Man

Filed under: Macintosh — jasony @ 1:48 pm

Tiger/OS X has been wonky on my system since I installed it. I frequently keep a bunch of apps open (8-10 on average) and frequently get the beach-ball. Apps (particularly Safari and Mail) can take up to a minute to quit. I think Tiger probably has some speed issues that need to be addressed.

BUT

Some of this may be due to the fact that I’ve been trying to run it with only 768MB of RAM. So yesterday I prized open the wallet and bought an extra 512MB module for fifty bucks. Hope that’s enough to make it happy for a while.

I typically keep my main work Mac for 4-5 years between upgrades so I don’t think spending a few dollars every year on maintenance and upgrades is unreasonable. Besides, I’ve calculated my next machine upgrade cost and it’s not going to be pretty. Between a new machine, a new monitor, a new Midi interface, a new audio interface, and software upgrades, I’m looking at a major expense (in the $4-6K range). I wish Studio Vision was still an option (curse you Gibson!). I have to upgrade everything at once since my old hardware isn’t compatible with the non-OS X machines. I could (and probably will) scrimp a bit on a non-Apple monitor, but the for the various interfaces I’ll go with the good stuff. It’s not worth the hassle.

The longer I can keep my current machine well-fed and happy the longer I can delay the inevitable.

Just too funny not to post:

Nothing quite says Christmas like a Hallmark ornament of Darth Vader, symbol of evil and cruelty, with a red light saber, ready to decapitate the younglings. I think this year they have one of Darth with his limbs missing; press the button, it glows like it’s on fire and screams. Happy Holidays From the Dark Side!

T3 magazine has a short article on Evesham’s PC Mini:

evesham_250.jpg

And for only $870 equivalent US dollars, this “new style icon” lawsuitbait is so much cheaper than those expensive Apple computers…. wait a second.

On a related note, T3 is one of those magazines that I like too much to not read but am almost too embarrassed to take it off the shelf at B&N. The front cover cheesecake is really annoying, but the inside is pure technological goodness. I half expect the products it advertises to come in a plain brown wrapper.

Yes, I really do read it for the articles. :)
