I’m listening to the Main Title theme from Terminator 2 (which was based on the main title from T1). Brad Fidel did an excellent job capturing the humanity versus machine struggle that was the main theme of the movie. The very first time I heard the main theme I was struck by how Fidel juxtaposed the mechanical percussive 4/4+2/4 rhythm (even using what sound like brake drums and metal pieces as instruments) with the haunting freeform melody that represents the human side of the struggle. It’s a beautiful example of the music capturing the essence of the theme.

Etch-A-Sketch
This guy is a master at the Etch-a-Sketch. I couldn’t draw a simple box on one.

Sounding Off
Sorry I haven’t posted in a few days. I’ve got a gig this weekend shooting three commercial/short films for this site. I did sound for the director a few years back on the 48 Hour Film Project and he liked my work, so I’m back helping him again. He’s a great director- honest, straightforward, puts together a good team and leads them well. He’s willing to listen to advice from the techies he hires. The DP is another friend of mine- it’s our first time working together. I was talking to Erin about it tonight and told her that it’s a good shoot in that everyone is very professional and we’re working our butts off in the Texas heat to get the project done on time. No attitudes and everyone wants to help, even when it’s not “their job”. Nice to be with that bunch. Plus, not an F-bomb in earshot! That’s a first on a set for me. I could get used to it.
Days have been long. We ended last night after midnight and had our call this morning at 7:30. Ditto tomorrow, but fortunately, we got done around 5 today. Unfortunately, I didn’t get cleaned up and relaxed for several more hours. I came home and collapsed on the living room floor only to discover a rather crowded line of ants marching across our carpet. Three hours later we had moved every piece of furniture downstairs for a full vacuuming, mopped the kitchen floor twice, and cleaned out all the furniture and rugs- not to mention spraying every entryway with all sorts of noxious chemicals. We think (hope) we’ve evicted the little buggers.
Off to a well deserved (and hopefully bug free) rest.

Beardiversary
Yes, I just made that up, but I couldn’t let the 20th anniversary of my beard go without some kind of formal recognition (ha!). I was trimming yesterday morning and realized that it was 20 years ago on the 4th of July (on a family vacation to Disneyworld) when I shaved for the final time. Outside of my family, the only person in my life right now who’s ever seen me sans facial hair is Patrick. It’s been so long there’s no telling what I look like without one (though, when it’s really short, from a distance it looks like it’s gone)
I was wondering what I would have looked like if I had decided to never trim. I’d probably have a longer face mop than these guys.
Bit-o’-useless-trivia that’s known only to family members and a few friends: my beard covers a 4″ long, Snake Plissken scar on my left mandible. I don’t have a thrilling story about it- I slipped and fell on a short brick wall walking to the first day of Kindergarten. Ran back home across the street yelling my head off. Mom took one look at me and said “DON’T LOOK IN THE MIRROR”, so of course, what did I do? Ick.
In the last thirty years the scar has migrated up onto my lower left cheek and become more jagged. It looks like I got into a knife fight. Someday I’ll shave the beard and scowl when I want to scare the neighborhood kids.

Sleeping on Air
Yes, this product is for real (Danish website). It’s a bed that remains floating in air through the use of embedded magnets. How cool is that? Only problem: cost. This sucker is over a million bucks (if you have to ask…)
