Quantum Fun

Filed under: Science — jasony @ 9:31 am

What do geeks do when they get together? I mean, besides playing Dungeons and Dragons and wondering what goes on in the women’s bathroom? If one of them is a doctoral candidate in string theory, they do the famous dual slit experiment!

Next week is Pigskin and I’ll be going up to Waco for the annual week long pilgrimage. My friend Matt (and his wonderfully understanding wife Jenna) is allowing us to crash at their place for a whole week. Scott and I will reward them by turning their guest room into a stinky boy-zone. There’s a special room in Heaven for these two (though Jenna will be the only one allowed to decorate it).

During the week Matt and I (Scott, you wanna come?) are going up to the science lab to recreate the famous quantum dual slit experiment, and I couldn’t be more excited about it. Really. I mean, singing and dancing and performing for 15,000 alumni is fun and all, but looking at wave interference patterns? Now THAT’S entertainment. I’ll just be sure to bring my 20-sided dice.

Make a Motor

Filed under: Mad Science — jasony @ 11:34 pm

I came across this little page today about hot to make a simple electrical motor from common desk drawer supplies. I looked through my drawer and had about 80% of the stuff in there. After a quick trip to the shop downstairs to get a 3′ length of wire, I came back up and spent 20 minutes putting the thing together. It’s spinning happily right now next to the keyboard. What a fun little project! I want to rebuild it with a better magnet and make the frame out of something more solid than bent paperclips. Maybe even experiment with more batteries and a higher potency magnet. What a blast to see the little thing spin around.

Another thought: I knew I had finally converted my wife over to Nerdville when she looked at the motor happily spinning away and said “Thats cute! We should name it.”

More Insurance

Filed under: Politics — jasony @ 4:25 pm

So after getting our six-month health insurance BOGU rate increase, I wrote a letter to the insurance company just to let them know that their practices aren’t going unnoticed, and that there are real people at the other end of their decisions to raise rates by as much as 25% every six months.

I got a letter back from the VP of the company today. In it, he told me that my calculations were wrong (they’re not, I double checked. He was assuming an annual increase while I assumed the biannual increase that has been their practice the past two years). He also incorrectly noted that our insurance premiums are based on my age, and that the company had figured the premiums wrong. He said that they had an age that is one year younger for me than my actual age, so they were going to have to raise my rates again to compensate. The only problem with this was that the policy in question doesn’t cover me, it covers my wife who is…. wait for it… one year younger than me.

So here’s the Vice President of a major American health insurance company making a basic math mistake and failing to read the very plain details of a very clear policy. He then tries to answer a complaint about increasing premium prices by erroneously increasing the premium price.

How much does this guy get paid every year? I mean, not counting his really good company-sponsored health insurance.

His explanation for why rates are skyrocketing is that there are fewer people to pay the rates. Too many people have been dropping insurance coverage and relying on the fact that hospitals have to treat you if you’re injured. And these people have been dropping their coverage and throwing themselves on the mercy of the state why?

“because rates have become so high”.

Give this genius a promotion.

Look, I understand that we’re experiencing the steep part of a Malthusian cycle here. I know that insurance companies, hospitals, doctors, etc, all have to earn a buck to make a living. But the whole lot of them have become like rabid dogs picking over the last survivors of a once-strong herd (that’s us, the premium payers, to clarify the twisted metaphor). Once the few remaining individuals and companies decide to throw up their hands at the ridiculous health care costs, the system will well and truly break. I don’t know what the answer is, but surely getting people in positions of leadership at insurance companies who can see past next quarter’s income statement would be a good start.

Makerfaire

Filed under: Mad Science — jasony @ 9:37 am

Next weekend is Makerfaire Austin. It’s a giant meetup celebrating DIY science projects, crafts, engineering, and general mad science. I’ve been planning on going (probably on saturday), and am really looking forward to it. Right now it’ll be a solo trip (my date for the day had family obligations he had to attend to). So I’m putting out a call for anyone who might want to go that day. Should be a lot of fun. Of course it’ll be a lot of fun. Where else do you get to see a giant booger picker powered by a human hamster wheel?:

Reunion

Filed under: Disclosure — jasony @ 9:27 pm

A few weeks ago Erin and I attended my 20th high school reunion. I went to the first night of my 10th (the thinly-attended “mixer night”), but we decided to spend the next day at the lake house of a friend. I’ve always regretted that. This year we decided to do both nights, and boy am I glad. It was pretty amazing to see these people from 20 years ago, hear how their lives have gone, and see the changes they underwent over the past two decades. Many of them had kids, many were on their second or even third marriages, and a few are no longer with us. In fact, I was shocked to discover that my friend Casey Joyce was one of the first casualties of the Black Hawk Down incident in Mogadishu. I watched the Hollywood movie of the same name a few years ago. Little did I know.

One of the highlights of the evening was the group picture. My graduating class was 1250, of which there were only about 250 in attendance. Fortunately, that was about all the improvised stage could hold. 250 is a LOT of people, and when you combine them with spouses and significant others, it’s a big bunch of people. We grads were just barely able to squeeze into the frame. After the big picture was taken, they called all of the grads from each of the high schools (9-10th grade), middle schools (6-8th grade), and elementary schools (K-5). As each school was photographed the crowds got smaller, until there were only a few representatives of each elementary school. My own elementary school, Saigling, was represented by only seven graduates. As we were standing there getting ready to have our picture taken I was struck by the thought that, outside of my immediate family, these six people have known me, and I them, longer than anyone else. Since we were only ten years old. Almost thirty years have gone by and my life has always included the names Chris Howard, Erin Richter, Haven Ford, etc, etc. It was quite a mind-blowing moment:

One of the best parts of the evening for me was receiving an award for “most unusual job”. Made me proud, it did.

I can’t imagine how someone would miss their 20th. See you all in ten years!

Mum’s the Word

Filed under: Games — jasony @ 10:25 am

A strange little community ritual.

Mumming traditionally took place in these villages during the 12 days after Christmas. A small group of mummers disguised themselves in costumes and went to a house at night. They rapped on the door with sticks and then entered, regardless of response from the hosts inside. Inside, they threatened the hosts with physical and sexual violence, while the hosts were expected to respond calmly and try to guess the identities of the mummers. If their identities were correctly identified within 10 to 15 minutes, the mummers removed their disguises and often sat down to a friendly drink with the hosts. If their identities were not guessed, the mummers left without disrobing.

I listed this under “games” because I didn’t want to create a new “busted-social-customs” category. Weird.
