Makin’ a Movie

So this is day three of production for Paradise Recovered, the independent feature I’m working on. My job is the head of the sound department (and the main mixer, and the boom operator… you get the idea). Today was another good day working with fun, talented, and creative people. One of those days where you work really hard and go home exhausted but happy. The house we’re shooting in this week is an old home in central Austin with a rickety air conditioner. Unfortunately, we have to turn off the A/C when we shoot (I’m not a popular guy when I call for it to be killed!). It was 104 outside today and we actually had to leave the house and go outside to cool off. It was ridiculous. Nobody had a thermometer, but I would guess it was at least 125 in the house with all the lights. Crazy!
We managed to get about 7-9 pages shot today, which is a pretty good pace for a small crew. The writer/producer’s blog is here and there are some flickr pics here. I encourage you to keep up with both locations for a blow-by-blow of the shoot. Andie (the producer/writer) is great. She’s doing an absolutely wonderful job of taking care of her cast and crew and I know it keeps me really motivated to do my best work. I’m having a (very hot!) blast. I’ll try and keep you posted how things are going, but right now most of my time is taken up by either being on set, or sitting at my computer for several hours every night transcribing my sound report notes for the editor, then reorganizing my gear and preparing for the next day. I usually take a freezing shower every night and sit under a blasting a/c until my nose turns a beautiful shade of blue.

Hey! I just found a super secret behind the scenes video of our location this week on YouTube. Thanks for the house loan, David!

Fireworks

Filed under: Music — jasony @ 9:18 pm

Erin and I watched the fireworks last night (the 3rd, oddly) with friends, and we’re watching the Boston fireworks show right now, and both times I’m having exactly the same thought: Who in the name of Tom Jefferson programmed the music?

I arrange music for a living, and most of my job consists of figuring out the right song, at the right time, at the right tempo, in order to get the job done- the job in my case is to entertain the audience (barry will understand this as well). What I saw during the fireworks shows, though, tells me one thing: somebody needs to hire an arranger. The song choice, pacing, and “shape” of the fireworks show in Boston was terrible! The fireworks themselves were beautiful, but the music was slow and quiet (dull, even) while the visuals were spectacular. Note to fireworks programmers: it’s the whole package, not just the visuals. Putting tens of thousands of dollars into a visual extravaganza and backing it up with whatever your iPod plays in shuffle mode just doesn’t cut it.

I’m for hire, if you’re wondering. :)

It took me three days to figure out that there was another side to the tape. That was not the only naive mistake that I made; I mistook the metal/normal switch on the Walkman for a genre-specific equaliser, but later I discovered that it was in fact used to switch between two different types of cassette.

13 year old reviews a 30 year old Walkman. Sigh… I remember these.

Calling Joe the Plumber

Filed under: Politics — jasony @ 11:06 pm

Remember when we were told we were overreacting to claims that candidate Obama was a closet socialist?

China’s Huanqiu News reported that Obama’s economic reform is in conformity with the Marxist Doctrine.
Watching America reported:

There is a joke that has quietly circulated its way around–In 1949 it was only socialism that could save China, in 1989 only China could save socialism and in 2009 only China can save capitalism.

Across the great ocean on the American shore, there is a view that has an astonishing resemblance to this one. On the front cover of the mid-February edition of America’s Newsweek magazine there was a very direct heading that asserted “we are all socialists now.” Is the United States a socialist country? Without question, it is not. Are there socialist attributes to President Obama’s reform? Without a question, there are.

During the campaign Obama was accused by his opponent of being a “socialist,” Castro, the Cuban leader, called him “comrade” and, more recently, the Venezuelan president Chavez jokingly said, “Come on, Obama, align yourself with us on the way to socialism!”

…The financial reform is very much of the same vein, as the U.S. wants to transform the Federal Reserve into what would be a “super regulator,” comprehensively strengthening regulation towards the financial institutions. It is also planning to establish a new financial consumer safeguard endowed with authority that far supersedes that of the current regulatory system. This way of doing things is in conformity with the Marxist doctrine of the Communist Manifesto in which Marx foretold a capitalist financial crisis. The American Foreign Policy magazine offered a very Marxist “prescription” suggesting that the “whole financial sector be turned into a public utility” — perhaps one could say, “centralization of credit in the hands of the State by means of a national bank with State capital and an exclusive monopoly.” (Communist Manifesto)…

Since June 10th, Obama’s countermeasure has been to start up a campaign style “canvassing” movement, giving many speeches, town hall meetings, and massive interactive forums nation-wide, mobilizing 2 million grass-roots supporters from all 50 states in order to hold propaganda activities encouraging the rise of national debate.

Getting close to the masses and having the intelligence to make good use of the masses, is a patent move used by socialist countries, yet it is quite evident that President Obama is also highly proficient with this tactic.

These are the words of a major Chinese news outlet.
