Taxation is Not the Answer

Filed under: Politics — jasony @ 2:37 am

“The grand total of the combined net worth of every single one of America’s billionaires is roughly $1.3 trillion. It does indeed sound like a ‘ton of cash’ until one considers that the 2011 deficit alone is $1.6 trillion. So, if the government were to simply confiscate the entire net worth of all of America’s billionaires, we’d still be $300 billion short of making up this year’s deficit…That’s before we even get to dealing with the long-term debt of $14 trillion, which if you’re keeping score at home, is between 10 to 14 times the entire net worth of all of the country’s billionaires, combined.”

There’s really no more cogent illustration for the argument that taxes aren’t too low, spending is just too high.

Make: Online » Is It Time To Rebuild & Retool Public Libraries And Make “TechShops”?

I’d certainly be behind some way of getting people to build with their hands. The current DIY/Make ethos is a good start. Sure wish a TechShop would come to Austin.

Using household supplies to electrolytically etch brass. This is very cool. Going to have to figure out something I can steampunkify.

The Arduino is Here!

The Arduino kit just arrived! I haven’t opened it up yet, though. A combination of a mild migraine and a lot of phone conversations has kept me on the couch all day. Between talking about music, making math-related inquiries, and possibly doing a fun new Mad Science project, it’s been an eventful day.

I’m just gobsmacked over this challenge. They’re giving away a $20,000 Epilog laser cutter in their contest. I’m sorely tempted to enter.

It sounds for all the world like they’re going to come crashing through the ceiling. I might just play hooky today and get away from the racket.

A Late Christmas (tree)

I should have started with this kit. Knocked it together in about an hour and it worked on the first try. The circuit traces and component holes were much bigger and farther apart than the ones on the heart kit, plus there were fewer components to solder.

I’ve gotten noticeably better at planning and executing my solder joints. The first few were horrendously ugly (and the source of the problems in the heart kit). Now I’ve figured out how to do them cleanly and quickly.

Went together w/o a single problem. Tomorrow I put together the light-sensing bugbot. Fun!

Solder on

Filed under: Hobbies — jasony @ 8:25 pm

I did it! Erin and I went to Fry’s where I got a tiny little sharp point for the soldering iron. I soldered the rest of the connections (about 50 or so) and plugged the 9 volt battery in. The bottom row of lights (see animation below) didn’t work, so I used the continuity tester on the multimeter to determine where continuity was supposed to be, but wasn’t. I had to cut a 1cm or so length of wire and Erin had to hold it while I soldered it in place. About half of the dead lights came to life! I found the other spot and hit the bad solder joint with the iron and the metal flowed into place, making the connection. It works! I honestly thought this one was a loss, and was treating it as a soldering exercise, so the fact that I had to use the MM to troubleshoot and I got it working is very satisfying. Hooray!

Metal Fatigue

Man, soldering is difficult. Erin got me a small kit where you solder together a PCB with various components (transistors, LEDs, capacitors, etc). It’s this one:

led_heart.gif

Either I’m totally fumble fingered (possible), the PCB was made to be assembled by a microscopic robot, or my soldering iron tip is too big. ONE SINGLE MISTAKE and the solder flows onto an adjacent contact point. *BAM* There goes the whole kit. I got about ten components into the assembly tonight and had a blob of solder flow down onto another off-limits part of the circuit. If I cant figure out how to remove ALL of the solder so no electricity flows where it’s forbidden, then this wonderful gift is pretty much reduced to a hunk of junk. Rats.
