Comment Spam

Filed under: Uncategorized — jasony @ 11:09 pm

I’m about thiiiis close to closing all comments in my blog off to everyone. Just yesterday I checked the logs and got no fewer than ninety-six spam comments in a single day. And they’re not all on one post or set of posts, but rather scattered all about everywhere, so it would take me hours of work to undo what an automated bot did in a few minutes. #$%# spammers.

And for some reason turning off the html and auto-link options in MT doesn’t stop html from auto linking. Either it’s not working right or I don’t understand it completely (wouldn’t surprise me).

I tried to put a box in where commenters would be required to enter some kind of number hidden in a graphic, but MT isn’t advanced enough to allow me to do that.

The links aren’t doing anything more than using up space and taking a tiny bit of bandwidth. I just hate the fact that someone is using Giles’ computer, and MY blog, to increase their google pagerank. Enough with the tramad0l and gluc0phage already! aargh.

  1. Hi Jason! Patrick immed me this morning to ask if I had any suggestions for you … I told him you should just upgrade to the newest version of MT. There’s still a free version available … and even though it’s a developers version … there are no major kinks. The wonderful thing about the new version is moderated comments and typekey comments. You could ONLY allow typekey people to comment – but if nothing else – turn on comment moderation. That way nasty stuff will NEVER show up on your site. You have to approve it before it goes live.

If you don’t want to upgrade … then definitely install MT Blacklist (for the version of MT you’re using). I’ve been patiently waiting for the new Blacklist thats compatible with MT3.01 to come out (it finally did) – because Blacklist is AWESOME for killing trackback and comment spam (I got over 1000 attempted trackback spams one night … blacklist caught every one and blocked it. I love Blacklist.)

Anyway … you can get blacklist here: http://www.jayallen.org/projects/mt-blacklist/

  2. thanks so much to Lacy and Patrick for thinking of Jason’s frustrations and trying to help. It’s really been bugging him (obviously) and it was great to suggest a solution.

  3. Thanks Lacy! I don’t host the blog my friend Giles does, and he’s pretty busy with a new job and a new baby. I’ll shoot this post over to him and see what he says about it. Seems like your suggestions should be easy to impliment. Thanks again!

    Jason
