Pantry Remodel

Erin and I spent about three days repainting/remodeling our pantry last week. We decided on a two tone paint scheme with crown moulding. Now every room downstairs is finished with moulding. In addition, I took three weeks to build a set of cabinets to go above the washer/dryer, and a neighbor and I installed them once the walls were painted. What a pain. I had made the cabinets to be 1/2″ less than the gap in the wall, but I didn’t take into account clearance for the trim around the door, so the cabinet ended up being very slightly too large. We had to lift the cabinet up above the door near the ceiling, face down, then move it along the ceiling until it was clear of the trim, then rotate it 90 degrees and move it into its final position. Some minor wall repair and advil for sore muscles, but we got it in place and hung on its french cleat. Then it was just a matter of threading the wire for the lights (you can’t see them in this picture, but there are rope lights along the underside of the cabinet, and along the top just behind the molding).
By far the hardest part of this job was removing and replacing the wire shelves. Those things are made to go up quickly, but they’re not made to remove and reuse. Unfortunately, taking them off leaves holes in the walls that have to be dealt with, but painting around them wasn’t an option. You can see in one of the pictures that we had to paint around about a hundred little shelf clips. Oh, and we actually did three coats of paint because we decided we didn’t like the first color.
