Daily Foley

Today’s Foley: footsteps, rustling bushes, rolling suitcase, squeaky brakes. Fun.
I wonder what my neighbors think?

If you haven’t been following the adventures of 16 year old Australian global circumnavigator Jessica Watson, I’d highly recommend it. It’s pretty neat stuff.

Picture Lock!

Filed under: Movies — jasony @ 10:47 am

I just got off the phone with Storme where he informed me that we’re at picture lock for Paradise Recovered! This means that the audio mix and color correction phases can begin. I went ahead and mixed a few internal scenes that I though (hoped!) wouldn’t change, and I got lucky. Now I get to download the final copy of the FCP timeline and dig in for a good month. Looking forward to it.

Congratulations, Storme!

Apparently, All He Needed Was a MIDI Keyboard

In an article titled New Software Processor Can Transcribe Music From Any Performance:
If only Mozart had this
, Popular Science talks about new computer software that can listen to any musical example and transcribe what it hears. What they don’t realize is that Mozart (and any decently trained musician) has been doing this very thing for years. It’s neat technology, but I don’t think it threatens our jobs much.

FOD

I guy I know who works at NASA was able to take a FOD walk (foreign object damage) around the shuttle while it sits on the pad. Pretty spectacular behind-the-scenes pictures here.

Seagulls?

Filed under: Uncategorized — jasony @ 3:56 pm

I’m sitting here on the couch reading with the window open while I listen to the rain. About a dozen seagulls did a low altitude formation flyby of the backyard while they made their distinctive seagull sound. We’re 200 miles inland!

Craigslist FTW!

Filed under: Business — jasony @ 7:30 pm

I’ve been selling a bunch of stuff on ebay and craigslist. It’s mainly old equipment or stuff that’s been taking up space. Ebay is nice since you tend to get better prices, but for the heavier/awkward stuff you can’t beat Craigslist, even though the buyers can sometimes flake out on you.

Last night I put a 4 Rackspace Calzone professional travel case online. It’s a huge honking thing that I’ve had for almost 20 years and never, never, never used. It’s been mainly a giant pain in my backside whenever we move, and takes up tons of room in the closets. Out it goes!

I posted it for $40 and within a few hours got an offer to buy. The guy listed some equipment that he had and asked if I’d like to trade, and lo and behold, he had the exact thing that I’ve been looking for the past few months: a 2 octave midi keyboard called the Oxygen 8. Perfect for doing Finale input on the road or small tweaks to existing sequences. We did an even swap and both felt very good about the deal. The Calzone was probably worth more in absolute terms (original price, anyway), but as I literally didn’t use the battered thing in years, and could trade it for something that I needed (that was going to cost me about $100), I’m really happy.

Hooray Craigslist!
