A Late Christmas (tree)

I should have started with this kit. Knocked it together in about an hour and it worked on the first try. The circuit traces and component holes were much bigger and farther apart than the ones on the heart kit, plus there were fewer components to solder.

I’ve gotten noticeably better at planning and executing my solder joints. The first few were horrendously ugly (and the source of the problems in the heart kit). Now I’ve figured out how to do them cleanly and quickly.

Went together w/o a single problem. Tomorrow I put together the light-sensing bugbot. Fun!

Solder on

I did it! Erin and I went to Fry’s where I got a tiny little sharp point for the soldering iron. I soldered the rest of the connections (about 50 or so) and plugged the 9 volt battery in. The bottom row of lights (see animation below) didn’t work, so I used the continuity tester on the multimeter to determine where continuity was supposed to be, but wasn’t. I had to cut a 1cm or so length of wire and Erin had to hold it while I soldered it in place. About half of the dead lights came to life! I found the other spot and hit the bad solder joint with the iron and the metal flowed into place, making the connection. It works! I honestly thought this one was a loss, and was treating it as a soldering exercise, so the fact that I had to use the MM to troubleshoot and I got it working is very satisfying. Hooray!

How to make your own mozzarella cheese. I might have to try this. On homemade pizza. Yum!
