This.

I wish I had seen this 23 years ago when I was just starting out. I probably wouldn’t have listened to it. I definitely wouldn’t have understood it all. But as I heard him speak now I just kept nodding my head over and over and over again. It’s all true.

If you’re a recent (or soon-to-be) graduate in the arts, I implore you to give this twenty minutes of your time. The man speaks truth.

  1. “Make *your* art.” Whew! He knows how to hit home. More and more, I’ve been thinking, what is *my* art? I do superb, sparkling, slightly derivative work in every genre, but what’s *mine*? In all my music — classical, jazz, pop, country, worship — is there anything that’s truly authentically me? Sure, my fingerprints are all over everything, it’s inevitable, but that’s not the same thing as truly having a voice. My music has been heard by thousands and even millions — KFC, Subaru, Taobao for goodness’ sake — but I’d love for my music to be heard by millions who wanted to hear it, who sought it out because they wanted to hear me. But of course that can’t happen until I actually do something worth hearing, that really speaks. Ahhhh, time ticks away!
