The Big Think

Hi friends,

We are writing this as a big email blast to everyone so that it’s easier to manage. Please forgive the non-personalization.
Erin’s biopsy results came back this morning and we didn’t get the news that we wanted to. While one site tested as a benign cyst (which we expected after it popped during the biopsy) the other one came back as an invasive ductal carcinoma. This is the most common type of breast cancer. We’ll have more details about specific genetic markers/sensitivities/etc later on. But for now, we’ve just spent the day absorbing the news.
The good news is that it’s small (1cm) and there seems to be no lymph node incursion on the ultrasound (the sentinel biopsy will hopefully confirm that). So it’s been caught early. Still, it’s been a difficult week and this isn’t the way we had hoped the diagnosis would go. There are millions of women who have dealt with much worse diagnoses who are completely fine. But today has been hard.
We meet with the surgeon on Monday for an hour when we’ll find out what our next steps are. In the mean time, we greatly, GREATLY appreciate your ongoing prayers and little texts/notes of support. We have a very strong marriage and faith but any encouragement from our friends helps much more than you know.
We will beat this. Someday it will be a part of our past. But right now we’re both feeling like we don’t want to be Old and Wise. We’d rather we could go back in time and be Young and Ignorant. If you’re a woman in her 40’s make sure you keep up with your checkups. Don’t ignore that little bump because of fear or hoping that it’ll go away. As awful as this is for us, we both agree that waiting longer in blissful ignorance wouldn’t have been worth the price we’d have paid.
Knowing that people are praying for Erin is an immense support. If you have any groups you are a part of we would very much appreciate being added to their lists. It is especially encouraging to know that we are being prayed for, so please feel free to tell us.
We both have a strong faith. It’s being painfully tested, but it teaches us that all things work together for good for those that love God and are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28). We have to hold to that pretty tightly right now but we really do believe it. Our God is in control, even when we are very afraid.

Coming Soon to a Health Care System Near You

Filed under: Politics — jasony @ 2:04 pm

I’m so old I remember when people said there would be health care rationing or manipulation we were laughed at for being reactionary and extreme:

Obese patients and smokers banned from routine surgery in ‘most severe ever’ rationing in the NHS: “Obese people will be routinely refused operations across the NHS, health service bosses have warned, after one authority said it would limit procedures on an unprecedented scale.

Hospital leaders in North Yorkshire said that patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or above – as well as smokers – will be barred from most surgery for up to a year amid increasingly desperate measures to plug a funding black hole. The restrictions will apply to standard hip and knee operations.

The decision, described by the Royal College of Surgeons as the ‘most severe the modern NHS has ever seen’, led to warnings that other trusts will soon be forced to follow suit and rationing will become the norm if the current funding crisis continues.”

Look for the Goalpost Movers to claim that this is eminently reasonable and all you have to do is simply lose weight or stop smoking. Whaddayacomplaninbout?

Followed by them saying “don’t worry… this could never happen here
